Hunt in South Africa - Review

Brown Hyena HUnt

I have just returned home from a three week hunt with my son, at Karoo Wild Safaris, in South Africa. Being my fifth hunt in Africa, my expectations were high in regard to the facilities, the quality or the game and especially the effort the outfitter was prepared to put in.

Let me assure you, Vic Watson and his entire staff from Karoo Wild Safaris, did not disappoint in any aspect of the hunt at all. Vic runs a very professional operation. His camp staff, tracker/skinners and other PH’s are all friendly and execute their day to day work in a very professional manner.

My hunt consisted of a very mixed bag from Cape Buffalo right down to a Genet, and everything in between. We changed camps on five different occasions to accommodate my unusual list of animals. Vic and I started planning the hunt twelve months ago and by the time I arrived he had it planned perfectly. My list of over twenty animals was scattered all over South Africa.

During the course of the three weeks we did our share of travelling, but in every instance we were after different game that could only be located in certain areas. The whole trip was a real adventure, just what you need on a hunting trip. The game quality was exceptional, and the one thing Vic is big on, is only shooting mature animals. A number of times he made the call to wait, and sure enough just around the corner was a much better option.

One of the nice things was the banter we had with Vic and our other PH Jason Oliver. Both Vic and Jason can take a joke, but be prepared, they give as good as they get. Even our tracker Mitchell would get on the band wagon and side with them and give us Aussies a going over. This made the whole trip a lot of fun and i doubt there was a serious moment over the entire three weeks.

The other thing i need to mention is their persistence. I guess I’m no different to most hunters, I miss from time to time. In fact I even miss a second time occasionally. Not once was there a harsh word, not once did they show disappointment, and not once did they get upset. They would simply say, lets press on and get another opportunity, which we inevitably did.

I would sum up the Karoo Wild Safaris operation and my hunt in the following way. Professional, knowledgeable, persistent, attention to detail, a lot of fun, hard work but very rewarding. If you want a great hunt with great people and value for money, I would strongly recommend you contact Karoo Wild Safaris. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Thanks Vic, Jason, Mitchel and all the other people we met along the way, who made this more than a hunt, they made it an adventure, an adventure I intend on repeating.
