Smaller than a coyote but similar in all other aspects. They occur in the North-eastern part of South Africa around Tzaneen/Hoedspruit area into Kruger National Park. Similar to their cousin, the black backed jackal in habits but not nearly as sly. The side-striped jackal's skull is similar to that of the black-backed jackal's, but is flatter, with a longer and narrower rostrum. Hunting them requires a permit which makes them less persecuted in the north-eastern parts of South Africa where they pose less of a threat to the cattle farmers than sheep farmers in the southern areas of South Africa.
It's almost impossible to tell the sexes apart. Males are more likely to be on their own and have a larger head.
Side striped jackal come in readily for bait and are far easier to hunt than black backed jackal. They like hunting for mice in the citrus and avocado orchards in Tzaneen and are relatively trusting and easy to hunt between the rows of trees. Success is virtually guaranteed.
The cost of hunting a black backed jackal is $1800.
