Hunting roan in South Africa is possible today due to recent conservation efforts. Game breeding has rejuvenated their numbers and they’ve been re-introduced into all areas of South Africa, making roan hunting possible.
Roan Antelope are endemic to the northern region of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique.
Roan Antelope are found in small herds of 8-15 animals. Savannah and open plains are their preferred habitat. Primarily a grazer, they’re also known to browse under drought conditions
Both sexes have horns, with the male’s horns being heavier and longer. The tips of a trophy roan antelope will point directly backward when mature.
Roan are heavy set antelope and it’s recommended to hunt roan with the heaviest plains game caliber you’re comfortable shooting with. An absolute minimum when hunting roan antelope is .270 but a 7mm and more is recommended.
Approach with caution, they can be dangerous when wounded.
