Hippo Hunt in the Caprivi

Hunting Hippo with Keith and Kim

Keith and Kim returned for their 4th hunting safari, combining a plains game hunt in South Africa with a hippo hunt in the Caprivi Strip of Namibia

Hippo Hunt in Caprivi

Our long time friend, Keith returned for a 12 day plains game and hippo hunt with us. Keith's partner, Kim accompanied him on the hunt and hunted some plains game species herself. We got into the perfect position for a first time African hunter, stalking a nyala bull to within 70 yards with Kim making an exceptional shot to bag her first African plains game species.

The zebra and blesbok hunt proved more challenging but Kim was up for it adding two more plains game species to her repertoire. Later in the hunt, Keith hunted an old giraffe bull, well past his prime. We spotted a waterbuck high in a mountain valley and after a carefully orchestrated stalk, Keith made a remarkable shot to finally get one of the iconic species that has eluded him on prevous African hunting trips.

We flew from Port Elizabeth via Johannesburg to Kasane in Botswana for the begiining of our hippo hunting adventure. Early the next morning we drove from Kasane to the Muduma National Park area in the Namibian Caprivi which was to be our base for our hippo hunt along the Kavango River. We saw plenty of hippo along the river stretch. Identifying a hippo bull is always tricky as they're continually submerging and resurfacing in a different position in the pod. We finally had one identified in a pod of 30 hippo in a narrow and dangerous confluence of two streams. Keith made a great head-shot and the hippo bull thrashed about before expiring on a shallow section of the river. It was nearing dark and a dangerous time to be on the narrow stretch of river so we decided to retrieve it the next day.

Early the next morning we tied it to the side of the boat in full view and attention of the same pod of hippo and towed it to a safer area where the villagers could harvest the meat of the animal. We spent the next couple of days exploring the area before transferring to Kasane for two days of game viewing along the Chobe River, one of the best game viewing areas in all of Africa.

This was another terrific adventure with our friends from Indiana to add to the many African hunting adventures we've shared on past trips. Thanks for trusting us to make this trip a reality for you and look forward to our next adventure - leopard and elephant!
