Black springbok are a color phase of the common springbuck and their habits are identical. Their coloring isn’t pure black and varies between shades of black.
Springboks rams have horns that are thicker and longer than the ewes. Trophy springbok horns point towards each other at the top or even backwards. A trophy black springbok will measure 12 inches, Rowland Ward is 14 inches, SCI minimum is 30 inches.
Springbok hunting always requires a well-planned, patient stalk. Some dedicated African hunters even cover themselves from head to toe in springbok hide in order to get close. When alarmed, springbok will let out a sharp bleat before fleeing. Unlike some African plains game antelope, they’re unlikely to pause and give you a shot opportunity. Be confident in your rifle shooting to ranges of 250 yards and use shooting sticks to steady yourself.
