Endemic to South Africa, blesbok are common in the Eastern Cape and Free State. Both sexes carry horns, the males’ horns being longer and thicker. Blesbok are gregarious animals with the dominant ram often hanging out on the fringe of the herd. Younger, non-dominant rams form small bachelor herds.
A good trophy blesbok will display whitening / yellowing of the horns with age. Rowland Ward is 16 1/2 inches, SCI minimum is 40 inches. A good blesbok ram measures 15 inches.
Hunting blesbok requires a good pair of binoculars and a trained eye as picking the sexes apart is tricky. Look for rams on the periphery of the herd, highly dominant and will spend a lot of energy locating and chasing away younger rams.
The cost of a blesbok hunt is $550 for a trophy blesbok. A plains game hunting package often includes a blesbok. The fully inclusive Karoo Special Hunting Package $5800 for 8 days include a choice of 4 animals out of a trophy blesbok, kudu, blue wildebeest, black wildebeest, zebra, impala and springbok
